Jesse Grant - 1st Mayor of Bethel

President Ulysses S. Grant's father Jesse Grant (1794–1873),was the 1st mayer of Bethel. Jesse was a farmer, tanner, and merchant. He was known for being an editorialist, prominent abolutionist, and father of our 18th president (Ulysses Grant). Jesse was married to Hannah (Simpson). Both are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.

 He held the political office of mayor while living in a home that still stands at the southeast corner of Plane and Charity Streets in Bethel, where he and his family resided for ten years.  During that time, Ulysses S Grant visited and spent 6 weeks in Bethel on his honeymoon.
